Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) Signed & Used Training Hand Wrap – 1958

£0.00

An extraordinary piece of boxing history, this original training hand wrap, used and signed by Cassius Clay in 1958, offers a remarkable connection to the formative years of the man who would become Muhammad Ali — three-time World Heavyweight Champion and one of the most celebrated sporting figures of all time.

Dating to 1958, when Clay was just 16 years old, the hand wrap originates from his amateur boxing career, years before he became a household name. The cream-coloured fabric bears a period signature attributed to Cassius Clay and retains the character of a genuine piece of boxing equipment, with visible signs of age and use adding to its historical appeal.

The timing makes this an especially compelling artefact. By 1958, the young Clay was already developing the extraordinary speed, confidence and boxing ability that would eventually distinguish him from every other heavyweight of his generation. Training in Louisville, Kentucky, under the guidance of Joe Martin and other early mentors, he was establishing the foundations of a career that would transform professional boxing.

Two years later, Clay would announce himself on the international stage by winning light heavyweight gold at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. He turned professional later that year, beginning the journey that led to his historic victory over Sonny Liston in 1964 and his emergence as Muhammad Ali.

What makes this piece particularly distinctive is its association with Clay before the fame, world championships and adoption of the name Muhammad Ali. Memorabilia connected to his amateur years offers a different perspective on his legacy, capturing the ambitious young boxer who was still working towards the achievements that would make him a global icon.

The wrap is presented diagonally within a substantial black frame, set against a dramatic black-and-white photographic composition. A portrait of the young Clay wearing a Lonsdale training shirt is complemented by historic boxing imagery, while the rich red mount, silver detailing and engraved identification plaque give the display a striking, museum-style finish.
