Queen Fully Signed The Complete Works 1985 Box Set – One of 600 Signed Copies
An exceptional and highly collectable 1985 Queen The Complete Works vinyl box set, featuring the original signatures of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon and forming part of the exceptionally limited group of just 600 sets signed by the complete band. Contemporary auction records confirm that 600 examples of this edition were signed by Queen.
Issued by EMI in December 1985, The Complete Works was conceived as the definitive retrospective of Queen’s recording career to that point. The substantial collection comprises 14 records, encompassing the band’s albums from Queen through to The Works, together with the specially compiled fourteenth disc, Complete Vision.
It is the sleeve for LP XIV that makes this particular set so significant. The elegant white sleeve, embossed with the Queen crest, has been personally signed in silver felt-tip pen by Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. The contrast of the four silver signatures against the understated white presentation makes this one of the most distinctive officially issued Queen signed collectables of the period. Christie’s records an equivalent example with precisely this configuration.
The timing of the release adds considerably to its historical appeal. The collection appeared in 1985, the year of Queen’s extraordinary performance at Live Aid at Wembley Stadium, by which point the classic four-man line-up had become one of the world’s most celebrated rock bands. Importantly for collectors, this is not simply an unrelated album subsequently assembled with four autographs: the signed sleeve formed part of a deliberately limited group of box sets issued with the band’s signatures.
The collection is accompanied by its original supplementary material, including the Complete Works book, the 1971–1985 live performance/tour itinerary booklet, and a large world map charting the countries in which Queen had performed or achieved record releases/chart success. These elements turn the set into an extensive documentary record of the band’s first fifteen years as well as an important signed artefact.
Complete Queen material bearing the signatures of all four members has particular significance following Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991, while the presence of the increasingly private John Deacon alongside Mercury, May and Taylor gives complete classic-line-up pieces a special place within Queen collecting.
