The Beatles Signed Autograph Sheet – Aeolian Hall, London, 25 November 1964

An exceptional piece of Beatles history signed by all four members of the group — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr — during their final recording session for the BBC’s legendary Saturday Club.

The off-white sheet has been signed in black ballpoint pen by all four Beatles. Particularly charming is Paul McCartney’s addition of “xx” beneath his signature, while George Harrison adds the inscription “To Anne Love from”, giving the piece a wonderfully personal quality and placing it firmly within the tradition of autographs obtained directly from the group during the height of Beatlemania.

The provenance is especially compelling. The signatures were obtained at BBC Aeolian Hall in London on 25 November 1964, when The Beatles recorded material for their tenth and final musical appearance on Saturday Club. Contemporary session records place the group at Aeolian Hall between approximately 7.00pm and 10.30pm, with the resulting programme broadcast on the BBC Light Programme on 26 December 1964. 

The programme featured “Rock and Roll Music,” “I’m a Loser,” “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby,” “I Feel Fine,” “Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey!” and “She’s a Woman.” The session came at an extraordinary point in the group’s career: 1964 had seen Beatlemania become a genuinely international phenomenon, while A Hard Day’s Night and their first major American appearances had transformed Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr into four of the most recognisable musicians in the world. 

This was also effectively the end of an important chapter in Beatles history. Their increasingly demanding international schedule meant that the regular BBC sessions which had played such an important role during their rise to fame were coming to an end. Their November 1964 Saturday Club recording would be their final pre-recorded musical session for the programme. 

Adding further historical interest, typing relating to the programme survives on the reverse of the sheet. Rather than being simply a collection of four signatures assembled without context, the piece is directly associated with a documented Beatles BBC appearance, giving it a particularly appealing sense of time and place.

Presented unframed, the sheet offers considerable flexibility for future conservation and display, whether retained in archival storage or incorporated into a bespoke museum-style presentation alongside imagery from the group’s remarkable 1964 period.
